Education Week, the most prominent national publication focusing on K-12 education, recently highlighted Red Cloud in a major report on the challenges and opportunities facing American Indian students.
Red Cloud students, teachers and administrators are featured in the special package of articles, photographs and videos, which looks closely at the obstacles schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation must overcome to see their students succeed.
In Education Week’s short documentary, Rilda Means ‘08, a Red Cloud alumna, staff member and a graduate student at Oglala Lakota College, speaks on the importance of her own education as a tool to move her people forward. “I can make myself better—and not just for myself. It’s for my people. Whatever the outcome, I just want to make an impact big enough to open the door for others coming up behind me.”
The report examines why Native students lag behind every other racial and ethnic subgroup in most measures of educational success—and what can be done to turn those statistics around. It explores the impact of Red Cloud’s unique educational model, and cites that graduation and college enrollment rates are higher at Red Cloud than at any other school on the reservation.
