Students Get a Sampling of University Life During Recent Visits

Earlier this month students from Red Cloud High School made the trek down to the Kansas City area to visit three distinct universities. Organized through Red Cloud’s Advancement Office, the trip is one of many designed to provide students with a first hand look at options for post-secondary education.
“It’s good to have exposure to different settings,” says Nakina Mills ’98, director of student advancement and alumni support at Red Cloud High School. “Being able to see the different options in campus size, layout, and makeup allows students to make an informed decision about what schools they want to apply to.”
This trip included visits to Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri as well as Haskell Indian Nations University and Kansas University in nearby Lawrence, Kansas.
At Rockhurst, students were able to experience what a small Jesuit institution has to offer, while their visit to Kansas University brought to light the realities of attending a school with nearly 30,000 undergraduates – roughly the same population as the entire Pine Ridge Reservation.
At Haskell Indian Nations University, Red Cloud students began with a campus tour led by current Haskell undergraduates. While visiting various campus buildings they were able to meet staff and faculty along the way and interact with other Haskell students. They were also able to hear directly from one of five Red Cloud Indian School alumni who currently attend the tribal university during a panel discussion!
“It was good to see the students experience something outside of their comfort zone,” says Carla Jasso, a Red Cloud volunteer and high school activities director. “They are able to picture themselves at the schools and realize how valuable the education at Red Cloud is in preparing them to attend the schools they are most interested in.”
