25th Annual Graduation Wačipí & Feather Tying Ceremony

On May 17, students, families, community members and Red Cloud staff joined together in the Fieldhouse for the annual Graduation Wačipí (Powwow or Dance) and Feather Tying Ceremony.
The night started with a grand entry by student and community dancers, faculty, staff, and seniors. After a number of traditional songs and dances, Red Cloud’s seniors took to the floor for games played to traditional drumming, including musical chairs.
To conclude the evening, a prayer was given by Alvin Slow Bear, a spiritual leader at the school, in Lakota. Parents, guardians and sponsors the tied a feather into the hair of each member of the senior class, in honor of their hard work throughout their time at Red Cloud.
“The Feather Tying Ceremony is an important part of our student's and our school's culture and tradition,” says Principal Robin Johnson. “When our students graduate from Red Cloud Indian School, we want them to take their culture with them and continue to keep it a part of their lives. This ceremony allows their families and the community to come together to celebrate the success of their young Lakota men and women.”
