Red Cloud's Lakota Language Project Highlighted in Rapid City Journal

The Rapid City Journal released a feature story highlighting the years of hard work and dedication that led to the nation's first comprehensive K-12 Lakota language curriculum. The story titled, "After Six Years and $2.2 Million, School Fights to Save the Lakota Language" was released on December 15, bringing attention to the issue of Native language loss and the school's dedication to preserving Lakota heritage through the use of the language.

The article fast forwards from early cultural assimilation tactics to the present day when young elementary students in a Red Cloud classroom move around the room in excitement as they play a word association game entirely in the Lakota language. In addition, the reporter discusses the issues of language loss, common Lakota words and phrases and the issue of translation and standardized orthographies or alphabets.
