Elementary Schools' Christmas Programs Affirm Catholic-Lakota Tradition
posted on December 23, 2013
Just before the Christmas break, students from Our Lady of Lourdes and Red Cloud Elementary schools took to the stage for their annual Christmas Programs. Children dressed in their holiday best, gazed with wide eyes from the stage at the auditorium filled to the brim with parents, faculty and staff, friends and community members. Everyone sat with cameras ready and smile on their face awaiting holiday-inspired skits and traditional songs from both the Catholic and Lakota traditions.
At Red Cloud Elementary's performance, each grade was showcased as they sang their favorite holiday songs like 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' and 'Mr. Grinch." For the final performance of the night, five grades joined together to sing 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' and 'Honor Song,' both sung completely in Lakota!
Our Lady of Lourdes' students impressed the crowd with fun skits that retold traditional Catholic tales, as well as original stories between song and dance numbers by the lower elementary classes. The telling of the trial of Jack Frost and Rudolf for accidentally melting Frosty was not to be missed and was a testiment to the creative minds of all involved!
