Students inducted into National Honor Society

The National Honor Society welcomed eleven new Red Cloud High School students into its organization with a traditional induction ceremony on Wednesday night. As the students’ names were called, they walked to a table in front of the attending families and school staff, and each lit a candle to hold in front of themselves. The current members went up first, and they shared their flames with the new members as they were named.
The National Honor Society was established to recognize the outstanding achievements of high school students across the country. Students inducted into this exceptional group of young people are identified as living examples of the “four pillars” of NHS: scholarship, leadership, service and character.
All Red Cloud inductees are chosen by a select group of faculty, and their identities are kept secret until the evening that the awards are bestowed. In choosing the recipients, the committee works to identify which students have been examples of the four pillars, both in the school and in the wider community.
Students must have a minimum grade point average to be invited into the society, and must maintain that average or they will be disenrolled from the program. In addition, according to the official NHS materials, “Academic integrity is of the utmost importance…As set forth by the National Honor Society, an NHS member must manifest truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to the rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others. He or she must demonstrate the highest standards of honesty and reliability.”
The new National Honor Society inductees are as follows:
Lyle Jacobs ’12
James Knutson ’12
Talia Lawrence ’12
Marisa Snider ’12
