Asia Shangreaux, a first grader at Our Lady of Lourdes, was recently named a winner in a contest put on by South Dakota’s Sanford Poison Center.

The contest was open to all first grade students within the state of South Dakota. Applicants were invited to draw and color poster figures of two porcupines who are encouraging others to stay away from poisons. In total, 50 schools participated, and there were over 1,000 student entries.

Shangreaux’s drawing was one of 20 pieces chosen as winning entries, and she was named a “Poison Prevention Winner.” Shangreaux also received a savings bond in the amount of $50.00.

This is the second year in a row that an OLL student has won this contest. Last year, first grader Ava Poafpybitty also made a drawing that received first prize. First grade teacher Lea Ann Buskirk says she is extremely proud of her two students' accomplishments, and plans to keep entering the contest in future years.
